My name is Martie Williams Cashion and I have been doing genealogy since 1973. The Pheral line was my first adventure in genealogy and I must give some credit to Dale Pheral (now deceased). Although I was only a sophomore in high school, Dale helped me begin my own research by sharing the information he had gathered for so many years; below are two tombstone photos he made during his research. On the following pages, I have broken down the family by generation and tried to include photos and document representing the first four generations that I have access to. Unfortunately, there remains quite a bit of missing information on some of the individuals and I always welcome correspondence regarding new information or information that needs to be updated.. In addition, please note that I have purposely omitted dates on those individuals still living in order to protect their privacy. At the current time, there are still members of the third generation living.
First Generation
THOMAS A1 PHERAL was born July 15, 1837 in Ireland, and died August 22, 1902 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. He married (1) ANNA ELISABETH ROCKY December 22, 1867 in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana. She was born about 1846 in Indiana, and died in Newburgh, Warrick County, Indiana. He married (2) ELIZABETH DOHERTY before. 1884. She was born in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana and no marriage record has yet been found.. He married (3) LAURA BELLE DOUGHTERTY February 20, 1887 in Newburgh, Warrick County, Indiana. He married (4) MARY A. JOHNSON July 15, 1893 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. She died May 22, 1948 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
A Naturalization record found at the courthouse in Booneville, Warrick County, Indiana for a Thomas Farall , indicates he migrated from Ireland via Liverpool and landed in New York on May 15, 1865. Although the spelling is not the same, it most likely filled out by someone in the County Clerk's office, as his statement was signed with an "X" on October 11, 1880. In the document, he states at that time he was about 45 years of age. This would have made Thomas approximately 28 years of age when he came to this country. He would not marry his first wife, Anna Elisabeth Rocky, until 1867 after the birth of their first child. It was during this time period that a soldier enlisted in the Union Army listed as Pheral, Thomas A. Ohio Twp., 25 Indiana Inf., Pvt.
At Thomas' death in 1902, he was laid to rest at Sharon Cemetery, Newburgh, Warrick County, Indiana next to Anna Elisabeth Rocky Pheral; however, there are no dates on her stone. Both stones were stolen during the 1980's. In the summer of 2003, Thomas' stone was returned and reset at Sharon Cemetery. However, Anna Elisabeth's stone remains missing to date. No stone has been found for Laura Belle Daughtery at Sharon Cemetery and Mary Johnson, also does not have a stone at Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana where she is buried.
To date, no photos have yet to be found for Thomas or any of his wives. However, photos of his and Elisabeth's tombstones appear to be the only images signifying their existence in the Newburgh area.
